Among its many treasures, Kheerganga in Himachal Pradesh stands out as one of the most famous treks. Thousands of tourists visit for its natural hot springs and scenic trails. But with this popularity comes a growing problem: WASTE. 

Unlike cities where municipal bodies collect and manage waste, remote areas like Kheerganga have no such system. From tourists, hotels, and local households, large amounts of waste are being generated every day. Especially in high-altitude areas, there are no proper roads or systems to collect and manage this waste. As a result, Garbage is left behind, burned, or dumped—polluting rivers, harming wildlife, and damaging the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

For the past ten years, Healing Himalayas Foundation has been on the ground, working tirelessly to preserve these mountains. Through sustainable waste management, behavior change programs, and decentralized infrastructure like Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs). In Barshaini, Healing Himalayas has established one such functional MRF where waste comes from all the surrounding villages. These facilities have become the backbone of waste solutions in places where no system existed before. 

But the challenge is far from over. To truly safeguard the Himalayas, we need to empower local communities and administrations to collect, segregate, and manage waste responsibly.

• Green Jobs for Youth and Women: Your contribution helps train and employ young people as “Swachh Himalaya Saathi,” working to manage waste in their own communities and empowers women-led Self-Help Groups to run door-to-door collection drives, inspiring households to segregate waste and take responsibility for their environment.

• Eco-Zones in Remote Areas: With your help, dry-waste-collection centers can be set up in high-altitude, non-motorable regions bringing sustainable solutions to places most in need.
